The Fascination of Lotto
Just imagine it…what would you do if you won the lotto? Millions of people have asked themselves that very same question, and answered it with a list of trips, vacation homes, and luxury cars that one might only find in their dreams. The excitement of lotto has made crowds of people flock to stores to purchase their very own lottery tickets when the jackpot rises to an amount that baffles the mind. Some have even been known to spend the last dollar in their pocket for a chance to strike it rich. As long as there has been lotto, there has been a fascination with what it could bring for those who won it.
Lotteries date back all the way to the Chinese Han Dynasty around 187 BC, while the first known European lotteries were held by the Romans as a form of entertainment at dinner parties. In America, an early form of the lotto was called the “Numbers Game” and operated just prior to 1860. It was regarded as a low form of gambling and looked down upon by many. It has come a long way since then though, and is now offered in a number of states within America, as well as a variety of other countries.
With the advent of modern technology, the lotto has also broadened its horizons, in that some countries now allow you to purchase lottery tickets online and play, even if you live in another country. Even though the probability of winning is miniscule in most cases, many still find it worth while to invest the dollar or to in order to partake in the games of chance offered all across the globe. There have been those that have found luck in the lotto, however, such as the highest paid winners, who won $390 million in America, or the two winners in the United Kingdom who brought in a whopping 161 million pounds. These stories of people making their dreams come true through the lotto fuel the fascination for it and drive tickets sales even higher when the next drawing rolls around.
The desire to win is so great in some cases that there have been cases of corruption, such as rigging the machine, and raffle scams in the states where a raffle is held with losing tickets. There have also been instances whereby clerks at the stores in which winning tickets were sold try to cash in on the winnings for themselves.
Lotto has even become notable in pop culture, where one can often watch television programs and movies wherein the main character matches all of the numbers on their ticket and jumps for joy as those around them stare in disbelief. Since its modern inception is has become a part of our society, as something that some strive for and others have given up on because they think it’s simply out of reach. As long as there is a lottery somewhere in the world, there will continue to be a fascination with lotto.
